SCHOOLS PROJECT

science for schools 2006 is the 350th anniversary of the pendulum clock, the first accurate time-keeper in the World. Huygens' clock was created by combining two ideas - the clock, which in those days could tell the time but was not accurate, and the pendulum, which was accurate but couldn't tell the time.

Science Magic toured secondary schools (years 7-8) in Sussex, giving a curriculum-linked talk, "THINK OR THWIM", about creative thinking.

Examples of creativity from the history of science were mixed with creative joke-building and gadget-creating exercises, designed to help the young boffins think 'outside the loop' and put two unlikely ideas together to produce something completely different, just like Huygens.

HERE'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE!

a) blood contains iron

b) iron is magnetic

Therefore... blood flow in the brain can be tracked using a giant magnet. (Someone has already thought of this, and invented the FMRI scanner).

The task for the young geniuses was to build a mechanical device which measures an accurate period of three and a half minutes.

They were invited to a special Schools day on Friday February 24th, to share their ideas with other schools teams, win prizes, and to watch...

MURDEROUS MATHS

Kjartan Poskitt's amazing roadshow, based on his hugely popular books. This show aimed at all age groups, drawing on Kjartan's, great legacy of writing and presenting for television and theatre.

They also visited...

LAB-IN-A-LORRY

Schlumberger's mobile science demonstration, suitable for year 7 and above.

See http://www.labinalorry.org.uk for details.
