A fun structured hands-on playing and making workshop run using giant percussion instruments and sound sculptures as a music ensemble. The session is divided up into two halves first exploring fun theatrical ways to conduct and control an ensemble of pre-made instruments using physical gestures and simple hand signals to change the tempo and dynamics of the sound. Different ways for creating unique fun polyrhythms are explored and then everyone is encouraged to take it, in turn, to try leading the ensemble and make experimental music.

The second half of the workshop looks at making sound sculptures using specially prepared sets of pipes that can fit together in many different abstract ways (a bit like giant K’nex). Sculptural towers can be built and modular sound parts connected to create playable sound sculptures. It’s a great way of engaging kids to work together and use there lateral thinking. There are many fun sounds in the boxes that are activated by blowing, pumping, turning or flicking to create sounds.

Large or small sound sculptures can be made in groups, pairs or individually. Finally, the group is encouraged to explore musical arrangements and to rehearse and then perform a small impromptu performance to finish off the session. (sculptures are large and parts are not for keeping).
