What is electricity, what will it flow through and what can stop it? Will electricity go on for ever? Why do we need copper wires? This workshop’s simple group experiments help you discover the answers to questions like these and begin exploring and understanding electricity and circuits. Use your discoveries to build your own Steady Hand Game with a bulb and buzzer, to take home as a reminder of what you found out and learnt.

The Making Place believes the best way to understand science & engineering is by making models, watching demonstrations and doing experiments yourself and in groups, with parents & children investigating together. Every child will get to make something/s to take away, which acts as a reminder of the science/engineering principles we cover during the workshop. Please visit www.facebook.com/themakingplace to see pictures of our other workshops and other ideas to make and do.

This workshop requires dexterity. Even older children may need help to get their creations working properly. Younger siblings are welcome to join older siblings but will need tickets too. Please note, if you bring younger ones, you may have to build everything for them, as little fingers need plenty of help with some of the activities, particularly with making the Steady Hand Game to enjoy and take home.

NB: We have increased the charges for our Family Workshops to £10 per child due to the increasing cost of materials, venues, facilitator charges, insurance and other running costs, to prevent our workshops running at a loss. However, though many people can afford £10 easily, for others this is difficult to afford. Therefore the Making Place is offering 4 places for £5 per child for families on lower incomes and also offering free places for 2 ‘Volunteer Helper Adults’ to bring their children with them in return for staying on afterwards to help clear up. We don’t ask for proof of low income/need, but please don’t apply for the discounted places unless you really need them, so that those who do can. Please email themakingplace@yahoo.com to book a discounted place. Thank you.
