Office Politics

We kick off the last weekend of the festival with Office Politics. Psychopaths mean business, as we will discover when authors Oliver James and Kevin Dutton reveal the gruesome truth about life in the working world. What’s more scary, ‘business’ often means ‘psychopathy’.

Do you look forward to the weekend simply so you can spend a few hours away from your boss? Why might that be then; is your boss in general mendacious, arrogant, Machiavellian, duplicitous, fickle, capricious? Well, what a surprise. So, you wonder, how did they get where they are, being what they have become?

Oliver James, author of Office Politics, will explain what it’s all about. He suggests that success depends not on how you do your job, rather on how you massage your reputation. He is joined by Kevin Dutton, whose book, The Wisdom of Psychopaths might be considered even more unnerving. For Kevin suggests that the cold-hearted but disturbingly friendly psychopath sitting on the desk next to you is possibly crucial to the success of your business. Psychopaths are confident, ruthless and focused. In a crisis they keep terrifyingly cool, and always make the best decision – the one which will maximise shareholder value. Of course you yourself might have to be sacrificed to make their plan succeed, but no doubt you’ll see the logic of it.
