SUNDAY 19th FEBRUARY Thanks so much to everyone who came along to yesterday’s events. The Chewy Gummy Physics Factory at the Blind Tiger saw people inhaling Victoria sponge cake and toffee apples from balloons; eating ice cream made using liquid nitrogen; turning their tastebuds upside down by eating Miracle Berries, which make sour things taste sweet; nibbling on blackcurrant fruit pastilles made from beetroot; and finding out whether they were supertasters. Apologies for anyone who had to queue – it was even more popular than we’d thought it would be, but now we know how fanatical about foodie fun Brighton folk are, we can bear it in mind when planning next year’s festival.

Meanwhile, round at Latest Music Bar, we had an entertaining day exploring all things environmental, from building eco homes with the Three Little Pigs to making seed bombs with the lovely Seedfreedom.

Today is another jam-packed day (including the Periodic Table of cakes packed with jam – yummy!) . At Blind Tiger, we’ve got the Make It! fair, full of scientific crafting delights. Create fabric out of old carrier bags; make towel origami dinosaurs; learn how to do quilting, spinning, and knitting; and make monstrous or magical creations by hacking toys. We’re open until 6pm so pop along if you’re looking for a fun afternoon packed with creativity, whether you’re a kid or a big kid (children must be accompanied by an adult).

If you’re after something a little more cerebral, step inside the Quabinet of Quantum Quriosities at Latest Music Bar. Be wowed by brilliant scientists – and don’t let age be an issue: we’ve got quantum physics for under 5s.

Tonight sees Festival of the Spoken Nerd. A small amount of tickets are still available online and we will have a limited amount available on the door but please turn up early to avoid disappointment if you don’t want to book a ticket in advance (show starts 9pm).

We’ve got lots more excitement planned over the next couple of weeks. Please do book in advance if there’s something you don’t want to miss – we do hold back tickets to all events to sell on the door but these have been selling out very quickly. We’d hate anyone to miss a show they really want to see.

Now, it’s time for us to get back to the throng. Have a lovely Sunday.

***********************************************************************

FRIDAY 17th FEBRUARY

So here we are. Half way through Brighton Science Festival and what fun we’ve been having. It started with Life, the Universe and Everything, hosted by Brighton and Hove Humanist Society. We gambolled through poetry, skepticism, catastrophe, storytelling, experimental music and the fantastic Marcus Brigstocke; enjoyed two action-packed days at White Sparks and Bright Heat; and topped it off with BuildBrighton and Smoke and Mirrors, whose events amazed and astounded, giving children (and adults) a few magic tricks to take home – along with an understanding of the science behind the illusion.

This weekend is cram-packed with events, handily located in nearby venues so you can dip into anything that takes your fancy with ease.

SATURDAY 18th

What Can Possibly Go Wrong? An interactive ecological extravaganza. Seedbomb making, windmill creation and eco home building with the Three Little Pigs sit alongside debates and discussions to entertain children and adults alike.

Chewy Gummy Physics Funfair A flavour-tripping forest of sensation. Eat a cake from a balloon. Suck limes sweetened purely through the Miracle Berry’s strange effects on your tastebuds. Wave with a jelly baby. Learn molecular gastronomy magic tricks. Tangle your senses with Flavour Sense-nation. Your tongue will thank you.

Sunday 19th

Quabinet of Quantum Quriosities Is there a cat in that box? How are penguins related to particle physics? Are you a bit weird? These and other questions will be answered when you enter the Quabinet of Quantum Quriosities.

Make It! Science gets crafty in this creative day of play for all ages. Make felt bracelets, mutant monster toys and an iPhone cover from recycled carrier bags. Bring a towel to make your own origami dinosaur and eat the periodic table in cake form. Crochet, quilting and a cornucopia of crafty delights.

Festival of the Spoken Nerd Stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, musical comedian Helen Arney and experiments guy Steve Mould delve deep into the mathematical wonders of the universe, in a variety show for the fearlessly inquisitive.

TICKET UPDATE: Apologies to the people who coudn’t get into the shows they wanted to. Tickets to all events are available in advance online. Where events are sold out online, we still have a limited amount of tickets held back to sell on the door to ALL remaining shows but please arrive early. If possible, please do book in advance to avoid disappointment as we’ve been selling out extremely quickly so far.

SCHEDULE UPDATE: We’ve had to make a few minor changes to Sunday’s schedule as a result of Brighton Marathon, due to roads near the venue being closed from 8.45am-9.45am. Make It! will now start at 11am rather than 10am as advertised in the programme. Apologies for any inconvenience. Please visit this site for further updates on the day.
